Trump orders Pentagon to scale back joint exercises with South Korea

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon on Sunday to scale back planned joint military exercises with South Korea after the Republican president said it declined to help denuclearize Iran.

Trump said in a social media post that the exercises slated to begin this week are costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea, which he said “has been unthreatening and respectful” while Trump has been in the White House.

“Therefore, and based on the fact that it is too late to cancel, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to substantially reduce the Joint Military Exercises!” Trump wrote. Trump added that he recently asked South Korea’s president to join the U.S. in its efforts to denuclearize Iran, “and they said, ‘No thanks!’”

The 11 days of exercises involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers were designed to beef up readiness against North Korean threats. North Korea on Friday threatened unspecified stern steps against the U.S. and South Korea, describing their military drills as a “a rehearsal for an aggressive war” that are triggering greater instability in the region.

Trump Threatens to Bomb Oman If It Gets in Way of US, Report Says

Source: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if the country gets in the way of the US blockade of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz, Fox News reported.

In a phone interview, Trump told the network that if “Oman gets in the way we’ll bomb the s—- out of them.” He also said that the blockade is putting pressure on Iran and that he has no timeline for resolving the conflict, declaring he isn’t in a hurry.

The war with Iran has dragged on for nearly six months with no resolution in sight. Talks between the US and Iran aimed at bringing about a lasting peace have stalled and intermittent clashes keep flaring up, disrupting the flow of oil and other key commodities through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. and Iran Blow Through Deadline to Agree to a Broad Deal to End War

Source: New York Times

Aug. 17, 2026, 12:01 a.m. ET

The United States and Iran on Monday missed their 60-day deadline to reach a deal to curtail Iran’s nuclear program under the terms of the cease-fire they agreed to in June, underlining the breakdown of a truce that President Trump promised would end the war.

Mr. Trump had announced the so-called memorandum of understanding between the two countries with great fanfare two months ago. But the short-lived agreement failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran effectively blockaded after Israel and the United States attacked in late February, or end a conflict that has entered its sixth month.

The expiration of deadline is largely symbolic, as both Mr. Trump and Iran’s leaders have said in recent weeks that the deal is basically dead. But the milestone nonetheless shows how Mr. Trump has struggled to achieve his war aims — like forcing Iran to curtail its nuclear ambitions — and how emboldened the Iranian government feels, with the two countries at risk of further military conflict.

There have been no publicly reported U.S. strikes on Iranian targets since late July. But the United States and Iran appear to be gearing up for a protracted campaign of economic attrition that could easily tip over into renewed warfare, analysts said. Iran is wielding its control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil and gas shipping, to choke global energy markets, raising pressure on Mr. Trump to reach a deal.

It’s true — people who live in states controlled by Republicans (the “red states”) are poorer, live under worse conditions, and are generally worse off than people in states controlled by Democrats

One of the enduring mysteries of America is why the citizens of Red states are generally poorer, less educated, and sicker than the citizens of Blue states.   Here is an answer to this deep mystery that you may not have previously considered.

First, that generalization is broadly true:

— Blue states account for about 71 percent of America’s GDP, whereas Red states only produce 29 percent of our income and wealth.
— The median family income in Blue states is $74,243. In Red states it’s $63,553. Individual states highlight the disparity: New Jersey’s median income is $89,703, while Mississippi’s is $49,111.
— Counties that voted for Biden in 2020 are more diverse, being 35 percent nonwhite compared to 16 percent nonwhite populations in counties that voted for Trump.
— Counties that voted for Biden in 2020 are better educated, with 36 percent of their population having some college education compared to Trump’s counties at 25 percent.
— Residents of Blue states live 2.2 years longer, on average, than residents of Red states.

And, second, it’s undeniably true (and documented with each hotlink below) that Republican-controlled Red states, almost across the board, have higher rates of:

— Spousal abuse
— Obesity
— Smoking

— Teen pregnancy
— Sexually transmitted diseases
— Abortion (at least before Dobbs; now it would be “forced births”)
— Bankruptcies and poverty
— Homicide and suicide
— Infant mortality
— Maternal mortality
— Forcible rape
—
Robbery and aggravated assault
— Dropouts from high school
— Divorce
— Contaminated air and water
— Opiate addiction and deaths
— Unskilled workers
— Parasitic infections
— Income and wealth inequality
— Covid deaths and unvaccinated people
— Federal subsidies to states (“Red State Welfare”)
— People on welfare
— Child poverty
—
Homelessness
— Spousal murder
— Unemployment
— Deaths from auto accidents
— People living on disability
— Gun deaths

But are all these things happening because Republicans simply hate their citizens and explicitly want high levels of poverty, ignorance, death, and disease?

Turns out there’s a much simpler answer.

The problem for Red states is that Republicans worship cheap labor, because it drives up profits for the fat-cats who own American businesses — and having a steady and reliable supply of cheap labor to maintain high profits requires widespread poverty, ignorance, death, and disease.

That poverty, of course, brings along with it the long list of social ills above, but Republicans are more than willing to tolerate massive, desperate levels of human suffering to make sure there’s a steady supply of cheap labor. In fact, they intentionally run their states that way to produce those results.

If you have any doubts about this, if that sounds like hyperbole, simply look at the policies the GOP has promoted for the past century:

— Republicans hate unions, because unions raise wages and benefits for workers, shifting them from poverty into the middle class. Once thus empowered, those uppity middle-class people then start to demand “unreasonable” things like overtime pay (Project 2025 would functionally end it), healthcare, paid vacations, paid sick leave, and paid family leave.

— Republicans hate Social Security and have worked to gut, privatize, or outright end it ever since FDR signed it into law in 1935. They do this because elderly workers in poverty are a great source of compliant, cheap labor. Reagan’s changes in Social Security benefits have led to millions of Boomers having to take gigs as greeters, waiters, etc., for low wages; prior to Reagan’s changes in the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) and his raising the retirement age to 67, you could safely retire on Social Security in most parts of America. Now, Republicans want to raise that age to 69 or 70.

— Republicans hate universal or inexpensive healthcare (and real Medicare for the elderly) because having massive medical debt provides a large pool of desperate workers willing to work crappy jobs for pathetic wages to pay it off. It’s why the ten states that refuse to expand Medicaid for low-income workers are all Republican-controlled.  Medical debt is a non-issue in every other developed country in the world, but here in America 79 million people are struggling to pay off doctors’ or hospital bills (7 million of those debtors are elderly, many the victims of the Medicare Advantage scam).

— Republicans hate the minimum wage because it cuts into profits. That’s why the minimum wage in Blue states can be more than twice that of Red states (Washington State is $17/hr versus Texas’ $7.25/hr). When most families are barely earning enough to get by, employers have their pick of distraught, panicked workers willing to work for subsistence wages.

— Republicans hate empowered women because forced pregnancies create more potential workers and unwanted children exacerbate poverty. Thus their 50+ years of opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment and their embrace of abortion bans.

— Republicans promote hatred of racial, religious, and gender minorities because when Americans are at each other’s throats they’re not organizing to throw off the GOP/corporate yoke. It’s hard to remember that the billionaires have stolen fully $50 trillion from the middle class over the past 43 years of the Reagan Revolution when you’re constantly distracted with hysteria about Black Haitians, Brown Mexicans, and trans students who just want to use the damn bathroom.

— Republicans hate education because it’s the main tool for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thus demand higher wages and better benefits. Before the Reagan Revolution, every American who wanted to and could pass the entrance exams could go to college; many universities (like the entire University of California system) were free, and you could pay your tuition at most other colleges like I did in the 1960s working weekends as a dishwasher at Bob’s Big Boy in East Lansing, Michigan and pumping gas at the Esso station across the street. This is also why so many Red states are gutting their public education systems with private school vouchers. Less education, more poverty; more poverty, more cheap labor.

— Republicans hate atheism and embrace a neofascist form of Protestant Christianity and a bizarre, rightwing version of Catholicism that goes by a Latin name because both are hierarchical and male-dominated, just like corporate culture. It’s why the Confederacy was explicitly Christian. “Don’t worry about how much you’re paid, boy, or bother organizing into a union; just keep picking that cotton and you’ll get your reward in heaven when you die.” After all, according to the Bible your fate was preordained “before the foundation of the world,” as was that of your boss, who must have been selected for particular grace by God or he wouldn’t be so rich.

— Republicans hate food stamps, housing supports, aid to women and dependent children, and every other form of what they call “welfare” because these programs slightly reduce the desperation of people who might otherwise be easily forced to work for a pittance.

— Republicans hate environmental protections because they cut into profits; who cares if the lack of them create things like the “Cancer Alley” — which hits children particularly hard — that runs through Texas and Louisiana?

— Republicans hate unemployment insurance because it reduces the privation people can experience when they lose a job. It’s why all the Blue states offer at least 26 weeks of benefits, but Red states often radically reduce that (Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky 12 weeks; Alabama 14 weeks; Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri 16 weeks).

So, the next time somebody asks why people living in Red states have it so rough, just tell them, “It’s all because of the cheap-labor Republicans.”

How the Republican Party destroyed the middle class and turned us all into serfs

Have you ever heard of  Russell Kirk and the origins of today’s fascist GOP?

Most people say: “Who’s that?” and similar questions.  Others are that Republicans actually believed the middle class created by FDR’s New Deal was a bad thing. So, here’s the backstory.

I was twenty years old in 1964 when I ran across John Stormer’s book “None Dare Call It Treason.” The Goldwater campaign promoted the book as well as promoting its claim that the State Department was filled with communists intent on handing America over to the USSR had his friends buzzing.

Ironically, Stormer’s book and the movement it ignited within the GOP is largely responsible for that party today standing on the precipice of fully endorsing fascism as an alternative to democracy in the US.

And it was started by morbidly rich men (it was all men back then) who wanted to use the threat of a “communist menace” to gut the union movement to increase their own corporate profits and CEO pay.

. . . . READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE

We are literally facing the authoritarian future that John Stormer was warning us about back in 1964. Only instead of “communists” in the State Department, it’s a billionaire president with the avowed goal of ending union rights and locking up or using the Army with live ammunition against those who protest his policies.

And it all tracks back to wealthy conservatives funding a project in the 1960s to scare Americans about socialism and communism so they could stop the union-fueled growth of wages that were cutting into their profits.

Perhaps none dare call it treason. But I do.

Trump’s war on Iran has blown up in his face and the US will suffer for years to come even after Trump is gone

BREAKING:   U.S. allies in the Gulf have completely lost trust in the Trump administration, growing increasingly frustrated over his inability to end the war with Iran, stating that American actions in the region make them “less safe, not more safe,” per The Washington Post.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain are all growing dissatisfied with Washington as the conflict drags on. One Arab official said bluntly: “Trump started this war, and we are paying the price for it.”

The frustration is now translating into action. The recent defense pact signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan was described by a senior European official as a direct “signal to the U.S.” and an effort to diversify security partnerships. A European official said: “From their perspective, America alone is not enough.”

Gulf leaders feel they have been dragged into a war they didn’t choose. Firas Maksad of the Eurasia Group said U.S. allies feel they are “unnecessarily trapped in a war that Trump is now struggling to end.” Trust in Washington has eroded, with Gulf states believing that American actions in the region make them “less safe, not more safe.”

The message from the Gulf is clear: Washington is no longer seen as a reliable guarantor of regional security. Allies are looking for alternatives — and Trump is running out of time to win back their trust.

BREAKING: Iran has concluded diplomacy is dead. Tehran believes a new round of fighting with the U.S. is now unavoidable and is shifting all efforts to preparing a comprehensive coordinated strike instead of wasting time on negotiations, per Iranian outlets.

The IRGC is no longer waiting for a deal. It is preparing for war. Iran’s military is on maximum alert, the Strait remains closed, and Tehran is ready to strike U.S. and Israeli targets in a coordinated, large-scale assault if the ceasefire expires Monday without an agreement.

The shift is explicit. Iran is no longer pursuing diplomacy — it is preparing for the next phase of the conflict.

JUST IN: The U.S. Navy has been forced to move its entire Gulf supply network to Diego Garcia, more than 2,200 miles away, after Iranian strike completely destroyed its main logistics hubs in Bahrain, the UAE, and Oman during the first days of the war, per The NYT.

Within days of the war’s start, Iranian missiles and drones struck the Navy’s main logistics hub in Bahrain, destroying decades of infrastructure. The attack forced the Navy to relocate its supply point to Diego Garcia, a British-controlled island nearly 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) from the Gulf of Oman.

The longer supply route has directly contributed to the severe shortages aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln — food, hygiene items, and basic supplies have become scarce, adding to the strain on a crew that has spent over 250 days at sea without a single liberty port.

Iran also reportedly fired two ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia on March 20 — a clear message that even the backup hub is also within reach.

BREAKING: Iran has rejected U.S.-backed negotiation proposal from Qatar and Pakistan, stating that while both countries are in contact with Tehran, Iran has not decided to resume talks, per Al Jazeera.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that messages are being exchanged through mediators but emphasized that this is not negotiations. Iran’s position remains unchanged: no formal talks with the U.S. until its conditions are met.

BREAKING: Iran has directly rejected Donald Trump’s claim that he will declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory, stating that “the Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by tweet, nor by aircraft carrier, nor by issuing an order, nor by an election speech.”

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi added: “Once and for all, accept the reality: up to this point, you have suffered strategic and heavy defeats; the Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian.”

He emphasized that the Strait “will only be closed and opened under Iran’s command,” and warned that “as long as you do not accept the reality of defeat and cease your fanciful delusions, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade.”

The statement comes after Trump claimed that after Iran’s defeat, he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory.

Most of us knew what Trump is from the beginning

There are millions of us who, when we saw Trump back in the 1980’s, saw right through him.  He’s a rich, sleazy asshole with bad taste, who went broke seven times, who went broke owning a casino, who liked cheating on his wives, who would push his own mother into an open manhole if she was standing between him and a TV camera.

We don’t have “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS).  What we have is good character judgement.

As for those who worship Trump, well, that’s Trump Derangement Syndrome in action.

What is Trump’s life expectancy?

President Biden was said to have shown signs of being sleepy in some meetings.  His performance in the first Presidential debate showed him confused.  Republicans lost their minds, demanding he resign and calling him “Sleepy Joe.”

Why are Republicans silent in the face of these facts?

  1. Dr. Barbabella’s recent report states that the president was evaluated by 22 consultants, an extraordinary number of specialists for even the most extensive executive health evaluation. Why were so many physicians summoned, and what were their specialties?

Mr. Trump often shows prominent bruising on his hands, which the White House attributes to frequent handshaking and frequent use of aspirin. Trauma from handshaking has never seemed plausible, and it doesn’t explain why the president’s left hand is often similarly discolored. Also, why would the president take a dose of aspirin four times as high as the dose typically recommended by doctors?

Swelling in the president’s legs last summer led to an unscheduled medical evaluation. The president’s physician described the problem as “chronic venous insufficiency,” a condition common in older people, that results from leaky valves in the veins of the legs. It usually develops gradually over a long period. But during Mr. Trump’s comprehensive physical examination just a few months earlier, Dr. Barbabella documented no swelling in the president’s legs. If that’s true, his swelling would be by definition acute, not chronic. Acute leg swelling is a potentially much more consequential finding that can be caused by issues such as heart and kidney disease. What’s the reason for this discrepancy?

The president often appears to struggle to stay awake, signs of a condition doctors refer to as excessive daytime somnolence. This problem, which is sometimes evident during Oval Office events, was not addressed in the report after Mr. Trump’s comprehensive physical exam in May. Although the president is a renowned night owl, his sleepiness seems relatively new. There are several possible causes for the president’s symptoms, some of which could have serious complications if left untreated. Has the president’s medical team identified the source of this issue? And how are they addressing it?

In October 2025, Mr. Trump underwent advanced imaging of his heart and abdomen at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The president’s physician offered a vague description of the reason for the tests: “to identify issues early, confirm overall health and ensure he maintains long-term vitality and function.” He said the tests did not reveal any abnormalities. Was there a specific symptom or clinical event that prompted this testing?

Past Trump medical reports have disclosed the president’s use of the drug finasteride, which prevents hair loss. The drug was not mentioned in the report after Mr. Trump’s most recent medical examination. In response to a query from The Washington Post about its absence, the White House responded, “The current report reflects all medications deemed clinically relevant to disclose at this time.” It does not matter, in any material way, if the president is or isn’t taking a hair-loss drug. The more important question is, what medications prescribed for Mr. Trump, if any, has the White House decided to withhold from the public?

The president has spoken about how well he performs on cognitive testing. However, the exam that Mr. Trump describes, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, is a brief and basic screening tool, with simple questions (draw a clock, identify a camel), often performed in response to a concern from the patient or a member of the family. Why has the president undergone this test numerous times, and have there been more sophisticated neurocognitive assessments performed?

Sleepy Donald

Donald Trump at August 10, 2026 cabinet meeting

Donald Trump fell asleep during yesterday’s cabinet meeting announcing purported changes in the nation’s vaccine schedules. By “fell asleep” I mean he closed his eyes and subsequently lost consciousness, which is what most people call falling asleep. Except when Trump falls asleep it tends to be reported that the president of the United States “appeared drowsy.” He didn’t appear drowsy: he was out cold, and if he were driving a car he would smashed straight into the guardrails (dyswidt?).

Commenter Hornet makes a good point about how this relates to the general theme of how social rules and things like actual laws don’t apply to Trump:

Trump’s imperviousness to consequences may best be demonstrated in the way he falls stone-cold asleep in group settings in the Oval Office, on national television, with dozens of reporters looking on, and nobody says anything about it except radical left bloggers. [Ed. note: adding, we realize there are a thousand other examples of his perviousness to consequences.]

Remember when Trump dubbed Joe Biden “Sleepy Joe?”

The funny thing is that Trump thinks he is going to run again. The not funny thing is that Trump isn’t legally eligible to do so, but that stopped mattering a while ago (Thanks to John Roberts. What would we do without your balls and strikes?).
